- Critical Thinking
I had some thought provoking questions asked of me yesterday regarding the purpose of technology in education. The questions were asked "does it make us better teachers? and does it make the students better students?" To which, I so confidently said "yes". Wasn't it obvious? In the 21st century, isn't it a given that we approach learning with a technological frame mind. (Not-so-fast!) Then I took a step back and took a deep breath. While I firmly believe that technology CAN make teachers better teachers and students better students, that isn't necessarily the belief of all teachers. In addition, just because technology is available, it doesn't mean that it is being used in a way that profoundly effects education. It is my job to hopefully change stakeholder beliefs and train them to be the best technologically-based teachers possible. I strongly believe that technology CAN, when used effectively encourage and promote:
Some time ago, a teacher in my building, Mr. O., brought to me a concept that was new to me in formality but not in practice. He asked me if I'd ever heard of "Growth Mindset". He went on to explain the difference between Growth and Fixed Mindsets. I have since become very interested in the topic. Please see the following website for information. More to come!
Communication - What a concept! School has started and as I reflect on the potential pitfalls of being administrator, I realize now, more than ever, how important open and honest communication is in a healthy organization. Most importantly, leaders must recognize the fact that they don't have all the answers. It is their job to investigate and find the solution and be honest about their limitations. One of the primary goals both with myself and our organization is to maintain and improve our communication processes, especially with regard to student, school, parent communication. I'm looking forward to seeing our school flourish as a result.
Research on Student, Parent, School communication -
I'm very excited to embark on this sharing journey. I'm very grateful to have performed a great deal of research regarding PLCs. Readers will discover that I have added a Professional Learning Communities page. This is were I will share all the information I have found in my quest for understanding. It will also be the site where I share professional development information regarding PLC's. CHECK BACK REGULARLY!
Today marks the beginning of research synthesis regarding technology implementation with fidelity. Over the last five years, I have conducted various types of research regarding tablet, laptop, and other one-to-one technology implementations. Based on the needs of Blackduck Schools, ISD #32, I will synthesize my research and post, categorize, and summarize resources under the "Technology Research" page of the website. Please return regularly to see updated blog posts on the progress. I will also be completing and posting a literature review/summarization which includes the research mentioned previously.
